We've Been Hit...

...by the flu bug?!?

I think that's what's going on. Logan had a crazy week last week - what seemed like either food poisoning or 24-hour flu from Tues night to Wed night. Then he seemed to be doing pretty good for the next couple of days. He wasn't eating a lot and was consequently a little low on energy, but we thought his body was just recovering. Then, on Saturday, he was really whiny, had a low temp (100), and had some diarrhea. That night he was super cranky - just not his normal self. Sunday he woke up with a cough that seemed to go away, so we decided to take him to church. He missed his nap (1:00 church) and the nursery leaders brought him to me during RS because he was nodding off during snack time. Logan fell asleep on my lap in RS but awoke about 10 min before the end of the meeting. He woke up super fussy and sounded awful. He seemed to have a cough and sore throat and sounded kinda croupy. We let him watch a movie when we got home and then took his temperature cause he just wasn't coming out of his yuckiness. It was 101. I could tell that he didn't want to swallow or cough too hard cause his throat hurt. He even drooled a bit to avoid swallowing. My thought was - I hope he doesn't have strep. I looked it up on the internet and saw that it's unusual for kids under 3 to get it, but it didn't say it wasn't possible. So, Garrick and I opted for the safe route and took Logan to Urgent Care around 6:30.

That's a story in and of itself. It wasn't too busy and we got in to see the nurse fairly quickly. The doctor took a little longer to come in. He was talking to Logan like he was 3 or 4, asking him how he felt and commenting on how he wasn't talking much. I wanted to say, "Are you kidding? The kid's barely two. He does talk a lot, but this whole sick at the doctor thing is completely new to him." Anyway, I wasn't particularly impressed. I was surprised, too, that the doctor didn't even listen to him breathing. Whatever. He did take a strep test and had us wait, and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait for the results. It was getting late, Logan had fallen asleep on Garrick, and I finally stepped out and asked the nurse if they had forgotten about us. She seemed a little shocked and said something about the doctor(s) checking the score of the Superbowl. (It was on in the lobby.) Oops! I was so unimpressed. He came in a couple of minutes later and basically told us the test was negative, so it looked like it was just a cold.

Logan woke up with the same croupy cough and sore throat. He has enough energy to play a little but still likes to be carried up and down the stairs, etc. (Not normal for him.) At one point I carried him upstairs to change his diaper and found myself short on breath, kind of dizzy, and just out of it. (I ought to throw in that our "upstairs" is really only a short flight of stairs - about 8.) I changed him and then told him that I needed to sit down for a minute. I soon found out that a bit of the flu had hit me. I took care of business in the bathroom, and Logan happily agreed to watch shows while I laid down on the couch.

Garrick called about an hour later to see how we were doing. He said that he had thrown up at work but that he was feeling so much better that he was going to stay. He came home about an hour later after realizing that he really did feel awful - chills, body aches, etc. Yuck! So, as you can see, we're a mess at the Peterson household.

Anyone want to come visit?

Nothing is worse than when the whole family gets sick at once. We have some of those awful memories. Hang in there!!

With John in medicine, I have realized all too well the faults of doctors and each one is different. It sure is annoying when you feel like you're more on top of things than the doctors. I've learned not to take a doctors word for things and trust my instincts, they are often more accurate than the docs and the results show up a little after I've been worried about something. I'm glad that you know what it is and are all taking care of yourselves, I know its hard though when everyone's down in the house. Take care, drink lots of OJ and water and get some sleep :)

I soooo feel your pain. We've been battling constant sickness at our place since mid-December. I'm exhausted and ready for my house to be fumigated.

I hope you all make a speedy recovery!
